Asbestos cement

Asbestos cement was used widely from the 1940s right through to the mid-1990s.

It often came pre-formed, for example water pipes, flue sections, corrugated roof sheets and flat boards.

Its use and supply has been banned since 1999, and care needs to be taken as they are often found in their raw, untreated state.

The potential for fibre release is low when left alone, however there is a high risk of contamination if the cement is damaged or removed without care.

It is often found in:-

  • Ceilings
  • Wall partitions
  • Corrugated roof sheets
  • Water tanks
  • Flue pipes
  • Tiles
